Kori Pūrākau | Year 1-8
Dance | Years 1-8
Kori Pūrākau (Dancing with Mythology) is the half-day workshop programme introducing students to basic choreographic processes that explore telling a story through dance and movement. Ideal for students from Year 1 to 8, it derives inspiration from Pou Kapua or Cloud Pillar, the centre’s stunning 21-metre carving which narrates the Māori myth of the great chieftain Kupe, the creation stories of Ranginui and Papatūānuku and the legend of Maui.
The dance workshop series is led by Atamira Dance Company. Sessions are approximately 2.5 hours in duration. Maximum of 60 students per session. Maximum of 1 session can be booked by one school due to limited availability.
Feedback from 2024 schools:
"This has been my personal favourite as I have attended several over the years. It is very culturally informative and very well presented. The Atamira dancers are fabulous and very engaged with our akonga.I was gladly surprised at our boys who smiled the whole sessions and girls that I saw in a different light whilst performing" - Elizabeth Tangaere, Teacher, Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate Middle School
"I was satisfied with how the programme was run on the day particularly when students were introduced to the carvings outside"
